MountainPlan Scrambling courses start on the 1st of April and run through to the 1st of October.

Scrambling

Scotland offers a huge amount of scrambling and summer mountaineering terrain. Scrambling is a term that is used for routes on mountains that don’t quite make it into the rock climbing grading system although you should expect to be using both hands and feet to get to the top but it will feel less sustained than rock climbing. Its also an area that relies heavily on route choice as its all too easy to wander onto harder ground and as its often done un-roped can lead you into some dangerous ground. Scotland holds many great scrambles from the ridges of Glen Coe such as the Aonach Eagach to the great ridges on Ben Nevis Tower Ridge and Ledge route. It also holds the UK’s most famous traverse the ‘Skye Ridge’ traversing the Black Cuillin range on the Isle of Skye.

Scrambling intro:

This course is run out of either Fort William or Aviemore and also on the Isle of Skye. We aim to pack in as much scrambling as possible giving people a good chance to get to grips with the technique and rope work involved. This is pitched at a low level so that people can be introduced without being to pushed and just enjoy the experience. Such routes may include Curved Ridge in Glen Coe, Ledge Route on Ben Nevis or Afterthought arête in the Cairngorms.

Scrambler:

This course will be for those with plenty of hill walking experience and who wish to try some of the trickier routes to the summit. It can also act as a gentler way to decide whether you would like to get more involved with rock climbing. We will also look into teaching you the skills to scramble independently in the future. We will cover key areas such as route choice and guidebook interpretation, rope work and also some rock climbing technique. Routes may include Tower ridge on Ben Nevis, Fingers Ridge in the Northern Corries of the Cairngorms or the Inaccessible pinnacle on the Skye ridge. The daily rate is £170 for one and then £20 per head up to a maximum of 3 clients giving a maximum cost of £210

Skye Scrambler:

This is a course based on the Isle of Skye and focuses on getting lots of the classic scrambles done. We shall also look at the skills needed in scrambling and teach the rope work technique and route choice as we go. Routes may include Pinnacle ridge on Sgurr Nan Gillian, the Inaccessible pinnacle on Sgurr Dearg and a trip up the Cioch. The daily rate is £170 for one and then £20 per head up to a maximum of 3 clients giving a maximum cost of £210

Skye traverse:

This is for those wishing to make a full traverse of the Skye ridge and taking in all the famous points from the Inn Pinn to the infamous Dubh Gap and Am Bastier. We set aside three days for this although the ridge traverse takes two days it means we have a day in hand. We can either have a warm up climb or have a day in hand to make sure we get the best weather option. We shall also have a bivvy at an appropriate point along the ridge. The recommended time of year we have found is April, May and June. The Cost for this is a total of £400 for 1 person we can take a maximum of 2 clients making the cost for 2 people £420
